It is a small nation with big character. And of course, birthplace of the one and only, Rihanna.

Officially, people from Barbados are called Barbadians but do drop the formality – call us by the term we use: Bajans.

1. Catch a Fish Fry at Oistins

Best things to do in Barbados - Oistins Fish Fry - Simone Says GO! - Travel blog
Friday night at Oistins Fish Fry in Christ Church, Barbados

The fish fry at Oistins market in Christ Church is a must-do in Barbados. A trip to Oistins is a mandatory stop for me when coming from or going to the nearby Grantley Adams airport.

Oistins is one of the best cultural experiences you can have in Barbados, from savouring a well-seasoned fresh catch of the day to taking in the lively atmosphere in the market complex.

It is open for lunchtime or dinner any day of the week but the absolute best time to visit Oistins is on a Friday night. Everything is fired up – the grills, sound systems, Bajans, tourists…

The debate around the best vendor in Oistins never ends…Pat’s Place, Chillin & Grillin, and Uncle George’s certainly get the longest queues.

Traveller’s Tip: While you can opt to grab and go, this is best enjoyed as a sit down experience. Picnic bench tables are set up all over the complex so finding seating will not be an issue. A grilled fish platter with a generous portion of sides included will cost on average BBD$30. Think flying fish, dolphin (mahi-mahi), marlin, tuna, kingfish. Lobster lovers, you pay more.

2. Discover a secluded beach

Bottom Bay beach in St. Philip

Everyone who visits Barbados will undoubtedly enjoy lazy afternoons lying out on the pristine sandy beaches at Carlise Bay in Bridgetown or Sandy Lane beach on the West Coast. And with good reason – they are pretty close to perfection.

But for all of my fellow adventurers out there, it’s time to take this itinerary to the next level. How would you like to discover a secret beach in Barbados?

There are a handful of beaches along the island’s Atlantic coast that you can practically have to yourself. Discovering hidden gems like Bottom Bay and Harrismith Beach in St. Philip is definitely one of the best things to do in Barbados when you want to kick back somewhere beautiful but off the beaten path. Heads up that beaches along the Atlantic Coast are best for sun-bathing only, not swimming.

3. Go hiking at Coco Hill

Coco Hill Forest in St. Joseph, Barbados

One of the best things to do in Barbados for active travellers is to take a trek around the lush Coco Hill Forest in St Joseph. Walking under the cool canopy of trees, ducking under magnificent patches of bamboo…ahhh. Just writing about this is transporting me back!

You can choose any of the 3 trails which lead into the tropical forest and for the next hour or so there is so much that you will discover.

Over 70 plant species are grown here – from Barbados Cherry and Gooseberry fruit trees, to Lemongrass and Ginger spices, to Wild Chocolate and Royal Palm trees. There are also incredible coastal views from the Atlantic View Lookout Point or The Mound Lookout Point at Coco Hill.

It is open every day between 9am and 5pm and welcomes visitors for self-guided or guided tours, and volunteers as well.

My first visit to Coco Hill was a family outing and we enjoyed ourselves immensely. Even despite (or because of?) a few hairy Man vs Mud moments.

We also left with a deep appreciation for the agro-foresty work being done here. The owner is passionate about restoration of the ecosystem and cultivates an impressive variety of crops on this land where sugar cane was formerly grown.

Traveller’s Tip: Bring bug spray and wear suitable footwear as parts of the forest can get quite muddy.

4. Sail along the stunning Barbados coastline by catamaran

Catamaran cruise along Barbados West Coast

All aboard! Get ready for the ultimate day out: touring the coastline of Barbados by catamaran. Believe me when I say this: going on a Barbados catamaran cruise is the holiday experience that will be etched in your memory for months and years after your trip.

It’s the joy of relaxing on deck in the cool tropical breeze and looking across the turquoise water to white sandy beaches and colourful homes. It’s the vibes on the boat as reggae music plays softly and Bajan fishcakes and other scrumptious finger food is served. To top this all off, there’s even a stop to swim with turtles. It all makes for an absolutely unforgettable experience.

I jump at the chance to go on a catamaran tour sailing from Bridgetown whenever I can. By the end you’re sunburnt and simply dizzy with holiday happiness.

5. Visit Builders of Barbados Wall on a tour of  Bridgetown

Builders of Barbados Wall in Golden Square Freedom Park, Bridgetown

An absolute must-see on any tour of historical Bridgetown is the Builders of Barbados Wall in Golden Square Freedom Park. Erected ahead of the significant national milestone of Barbados becoming a Republic, the wall of engraved surnames celebrates generations of Barbadians who have shaped the nation over centuries.

Who knows, perhaps you’ll be standing there as a couple of Bajans pop by, eagerly hunting for the brick bearing their surname. If that is indeed the case you’ll definitely witness the display of proud emotions as they identify it. I may have let out a little high-pitched yelp when I found mine!

6. Feast on a traditional Saturday lunch dish

Best things to do in Barbados - Pudding and Souse - Simone Says GO! - Travel blog
Pudding and souse is a traditional lunch dish enjoyed by Bajans on Saturdays.

Saturday translates to “pudding and souse day” in Bajan culture. Souse is a pickled pork dish served cold and the black pudding is a steamed sweet potato. I’ll be honest – the dish is an acquired taste for some but it’s well-worth trying.

Souse Saturday is also a great time to mingle on the local scene. Places such as Village Bar and Bay Tavern in St John are some of the best places to visit in Barbados to try pudding and souse, or other traditional meals. My recommendation is to arrive before / by 12pm as this and other top dishes such as the grilled barbeque meats sell out quickly!

7. See magnificent horses splashing around at sea

Horses having a sea bath in Bridgetown

An early morning trip to Pebbles Beach in front of Hilton Barbados hotel comes with a fun twist – race horses at sea! Going to see horses at the beach is increasingly growing in popularity as one of the best things to do Barbados.

Horse jockeys can be seen bringing the animals on the beach for an ocean dip and a bit of exercise. It’s truly an unexpected and fun spectacle.

Please remember to maintain a safe distance from the horses. These are thoroughbreds and you don’t want to risk spooking them!

8. Enjoy a day at the races at the Garrison Savannah

The Garrison Savannah is Barbados’ historic horse racing venue. It is located a mile away from Bridgetown.

Going to the races at the Garrison Savannah is a long-time Bajan family tradition. While its popularity as a weekend family outing has waned in the 21st century there are a couple headline events that still pull the big crowds: Gold Cup and Boxing Day Races.

The Sandy Lane Gold Cup is one of the premier sporting events in Barbados. Around the grounds it is a casual festive affair. For a fancier vibe, check out the VIP stand where you’ll find most of the ladies sporting spectacular fascinators in every colour.

Racing seasons in Barbados run from January to April, May to August, breaks in September, and picks up again from October to December.

You can stand around the perimeter of the track and watch for free but it’s best to buy a grandstand ticket (where there is shade). This is where the atmosphere is thick with excitement. Step on in and feel the sparks flying.

Traveller’s tip: Cool down after a hot day at the races with a cocktail along the South Coast. There are countless top restaurants and beachside bars along the Hastings strip including Sugar Bay Barbados and Tapas Restaurant, or the more casual Chill Café & Bistro and Blakey’s Bar & Restaurant.

9. Learn about Bajan rum-making on a distillery tour

Going on a rum distillery tour is one of the best things to do in Barbados. An unforgettable experience of being educated on the rum-making process while being entertained by a lively guide. Their ability to spew tons of knowledge and serve up endless humour is seriously impressive.

Inhaling the sweet smell of molasses is a big highlight for me on the tour. The delicious scent almost seems to travel to the tip of your tongue.

Then, of course, comes the part that everyone loves: a tasting session. On my Signature Rum Tasting Mount Gay tour we followed the lead of our amazing guide, Rico, and embarked on a dramatic rum-tasting journey.  When “which aged rum will take your fancy?” is the most important decision of the day, you know you’re doing your holiday right.

Take your pick from any of the tours offered at Mount Gay Distillery and Visitor Center, Foursquare Rum Distillery and Heritage Park, or St. Nicholas Abbey.

Don’t be intimidated by the vast array of experiences on offer – whichever tour you choose will be incredible.

10. Chill out at a Bajan rum shop

The Bajan rum shop is a cultural institution in Barbados. It’s where people go to have a drink, enjoy a meal, slam dominoes, debate politics at 100 decibels, and share countless jokes with new buddies at neighbouring tables. It’s the most relaxing afternoon appointment you can book yourself into.

Finding a rum shop in Barbados will be no issue whatsoever – there are over 1500 of them on the small island. You’ll see the brightly painted rum shops everywhere. Local and tourist favourites include John Moore in St. James, Braddies Bar in Dover or Kermitt’s Bar in Oistins town.

Traveller’s Tip: What’s the last thing you want to do in Barbados? Here’s my recommendation: on your day of departure, head to Grantley Adams airport and check your bags in early. Then, head over to Pug’s rum shop immediately opposite to the airport. One last refreshing Banks beer, one more Bajan meal calls.

11. Take a horseback riding tour on the Atlantic coast

Going horseback riding in Barbados is a highly rated experience which few visitors know about. One of the best places in Barbados to go on a horseback riding tour is from Bath Beach in St. John. Novice riders can join in the fun as well. It is a very cool experience to trod through lush vegetation to view the Atlantic coast from above as well as experience it from the beautiful shoreline.

If you’re interested in exploring Barbados by horseback on the Atlantic coast, check out the tours at Ocean Echo Stables.

12. Be bowled over by Big Cricket Energy at Kensington Oval

Best things to do in Barbados - Cricket - Kensington Oval - Simone Says GO! - Travel blog
Cricket match at Kensington Oval in Barbados

The stunning Kensington Oval is located right on the outskirts of Bridgetown. The world-class venue is one of the best places to go in Barbados when games are scheduled. And boy, the vibes are off the chart when international test cricket or T-20 matches are on.

International tournaments typically take place at Kensington Oval between January and April each year which happens to be the best time to visit Barbados. If you’re from a country with cold climate, there are few things that can beat being at the oval in January or February,  jumping up with rum-punch infused joy as the batter hits a glorious 6.

And this summer, Barbados is THE place to be as ICC Men’s T20 World Cup cricket gets underway. Several fixtures are at Kensington Oval in June 2024 – including the Final – meaning that going to cricket is hands down one of the beset things to do in Barbados this summer.

Win, lose, or draw, attending cricket at Kensington Oval can be one of the most fun days you spend in Barbados. Just talking about it gets me a bit giddy with excitement!

Wait a Bajan minute…did you know? One of the most widely cricket sayings used in Barbados is “hit for six”. It means to leave someone surprised or in shock. Example: “Rihanna’s baby reveal during her Superbowl performance hit me for six.”

13. Walk along the abandoned Barbados Railway

Walking along the former Barbados Railway in Bathsheba, St. Joseph.

Barbados Railway route runs for 38.6km (24 miles) from Bridgetown in St. Michael to Belleplaine in St. Andrew. It’s been out of use for close to a century – operating between 1881 and 1937.

The most scenic and peaceful section to walk is from Bath Beach to Bathsheba. The midway point is Martin’s Bay which is great place to stop for a refreshment at Bay Tavern. Take a break at one of the picnic tables and conjure up visions of an old steam train chugging along this coastal path, transporting freshly harvested sugar cane.

Traveller’s Tip: If you are visiting Barbados in the month of February, consider joining the Colin Hudson Memorial Great Train Hike. The annual hike takes place on the 3rd Sunday in February. Don’t forget to stretch – you’ll be walking the full 24 miles of the Barbados Railway trail.

14. Take the off the beaten path up to Hackleton’s Cliff

Best things to do in Barbados - Hackletons Cliff Viewpoint - Simone Says GO! - Travel blog
Views across the Barbados Atlantic Coast rom the park at Hackleton’s Cliff in St. John

Hackleton’s Cliff in St. John is one of the best viewpoints in Barbados, offering sweeping views of Bathsheba and all of the rugged East Coast. This place of beauty is not without its scars however. Legend has it that a grief-stricken Colonel Hackett grabbed his wife’s horse and galloped straight over the cliff after discovering that she was being unfaithful. Very sad if it’s true. There’s now a fence erected, no worries. But this does bring me to a key point regarding logistics and safety – getting to Hackleton’s.

Arriving at Hackleton’s Cliff comes with a twist. Literally. Part of the adventure on this visit will be the challenging drive. It’s along really narrow and windy country roads. Probably best to visit with a tour.

15. Join local hikers on Stop & Stare or special Moonlight Walks

Best things to do in Barbados - Hiking Barbados National Trust - Simone Says GO! - Travel blog
Hiking in Barbados is one of the best ways to discover some of the most dramatic scenery on the island.

Every Sunday the Barbados Hikers Association departs from a designated landmark for 3 hours of exploration. One Sunday the route may take you along a coastline while the next week’s trek may be through a tropical forest. Anyone is welcome to join and these hikes are free.

The group sets off on Sunday mornings at 6am. Depending on your level of fitness and preferred pace you can join “Stop and Stare”, “Medium”, “Fast Medium” or the “Grin ‘n Bear” group. Later that day, a single group hike is held at 3:30 pm.

The quarterly calendar of hiking events is posted on their Facebook page. Check it out as you are planning your travel to Barbados as there is sure to be a hike that coincides with your trip dates.

16. Jam to sweet calypso tunes at the Crop Over Festival

Crop Over season in Barbados is a period when everyone gets together to lime (Caribbean term for hanging out), eat, drink, and dance to calypso music at remarkable locations across the island. And around the island too – party cruises are hugely popular in June and July.

As the name suggests, Crop Over historically represents a celebration of the end of the sugar cane harvesting season. It would only be fitting to toast to the occasion with…Rum. And more Rum.

The season ends in a massive street party on the first Monday of August: Grand Kadooment Day. This is the ultimate celebration of Caribbean life and culture as guys and gals hit the road flashing their gorgeous bedazzled costumes, bouncing to sweet rhythms from the band for 5-6 hours non-stop.

17. Dine out in Speightstown

Restaurants line the ocean front in Speightstown.

Speightstown is located in the northern parish of St. Peter. Although it is Barbados’ second largest city centre, it is often overlooked for the more buzzy Holetown area. Which is why many have still not caught on to the fact that there are amazing restaurants cooking up all sorts of deliciousness in this area.

Here’s your chance to check out spots like Local & Co. It sources its ingredients from local farms such as Walkers Reserve in St. Andrew. In a recent documentary, owner Ian McNeail describes Local as “an expression of connecting chefs and farmers together and building local economy through that process.”

Farm-to-table culinary delights? ‘Nuff said. Let’s head north to Speightstown.

18. Kite-surf with turtles on Barbados’ South Coast

Kitesurfing in Barbados on the South Coast

Due to its location out in the Atlantic, Barbados is a popular destination for kitesurfing. December through March is peak time to catch those trade winds blowing in from the east.

Silver Rock Beach on the southeast coast is the best place to go kitesurfing in Barbados. According to the pros, it is the easiest place on the island to launch. As a result you’ll find a large community of kitesurfers here, many of who opt to stay in accommodations nearby.

Beginners have several surf school options in the south coast area including Zed’s Surfing Adventures and DeAction Beach Shop.

19. Go Karting at Bushy Park Circuit

Grand Prix Karting Experience at Bushy Park in St. Philip

Bushy Park in St Philip is Barbados’ top racing circuit. Their Karting Experience is a cool idea for some group fun. Actually, ‘fun’ is too tame of a description…it’s downright thrilling.

Not only did I find the driving to be a wildly exhilarating experience, the real surprise factor was how much it brought out the competitive streaks in usually mild-natured friends. Such a blast!

Wait a Bajan minute…did you know? A Bajan driver is making his mark in global motorsport. Tune into Formula 2 and look out for Zane Maloney who currently represents the Red Bull team. Let’s go Zane!

20. Indulge in an icy treat from the Snow Cone Man

Whether you are exploring Bridgetown or relaxing at the beach, you are sure to hear the distinctive horn of the snowcone man passing with the cart. This is a refreshing icy beverage that is especially welcome under the midday sun. Grab your change and hurry, catch up!
