The High Line NYC: Why Visitors Keep Returning

Over a decade later, the High Line is still the darling of NYC’s West Side attractions. An urban sky garden with a certain charm that endears her to tourists and New Yorkers alike.

What makes this former freight-line-turned-promenade so special is how she transports urban explorers through nature, art, and ultra-capitalism over the length of her body.

1.45 miles of it to be exact.

Best Times to Visit the High Line

The hours on the fringe of opening and closing times are typically the best times to visit the High Line.

Gansevoort Street, 23rd Street, or 30th Street are the access points to this urban oasis.

As the sun rises over Manhattan, local residents take advantage of the rare quiet on the walkway with an early morning jog, or coffee with NYC as she powers up for a new day.

Today, the High Line welcomes all visitors, albeit with new hours and entry requirements.

On weekdays, the park is open from 7am until 7pm without reservations.

On weekends, the High Line is accessible with reservations. Folks can now pre-book for timed entry and enjoy the park between 10am and 6pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

The controlled traffic volumes lend to a more intimate experience.

“Experience what exactly?” some may wonder.

Let’s explore the allure of the High Line NYC.

An Artsy Welcome to the High Line

From the northern entrance on 30th street and 10th avenue, you walk directly on to The Spur.

Between the art installation and the sweeping street views of Manhattan the welcome message is clear: this will not be a mere walk in the park.

Stroll the High Line, Experience NYC’s Capitalist Jungle

One of the most striking experiences on the High Line comes early: behold the sight of a vast jungle.

Not the thick foliage lining its pathways though. It is a jungle of luxury buildings that frame her long torso.

The juxtaposition of the multi-million private residences (that show no sign of life inside) accessorizing both sides of the busy communal garden is startling.

A rare show of indiscreet opulence from New York’s uber-wealthy in such a public setting.

The glitzy, glassy condominiums located on the east side of the High Line are so close in proximity to the promenade that you will peer in! There isn’t a single passerby that can resist it. Not to mention most of the condos are unobstructed by blinds as if to welcome our curious eyes.

Exhilaration Meets Zen on the High Line

Like Times Square, the High Line is overwhelming popular. Unlike Times Square where crowd fatigue or anxiety can creep in, The High Line does not overwhelm the senses in any negative way. Rather, its effect is a peculiar mix of exhilaration meets zen.

Hearts will beat a bit faster as the eyes devour the grand spectacle of the surrounding real estate, while the ears capture the not-too-distant sounds of a bustling NYC below.

Yet the environment also evokes a certain calm to the soul. It is likely the effect of watching the city scenes play out from the safety of an elevated stage.

Be sure to bask in the moment. Enjoy a leisurely dance among plants and slow-paced strangers, and periodically stop to relax on any of the front-row seats.

The Best Way To Enjoy The High Line…

is sober. No booze is allowed here so do resist the urge to pop your bottle of bubbly while sky lounging. Things could go from fabulous to infuriating quickly if you are caught with any type of alcoholic beverage and slapped with a penalty.

Like most of the US, drinking in public is illegal in New York City. Open-container laws prohibit holding or consuming alcohol in public. The NYPD doesn’t mind issuing the occasional summons for “drinking while sightseeing”.

Where The High Line Leads You

The beauty of The High Line is not just in the park itself, but also in its accessibility to some of the best restaurants, museums and sightseeing attractions on NYC’s west side.

From the northern tip of the High Line you can enter directly into Hudson Yards and enjoy even greater views of NYC from The Edge sky deck, or admire the bronze showstopper: The Vessel.

Further west sits Chelsea Piers and the Hudson River path. An excellent choice for renting a bike and cruising to either downtown or uptown Manhattan.

Another highly-rated attraction along that path is the Intrepid Air, Sea and Space Museum.

At its southern tip you will descend into the fashionable Meatpacking District.

If you are a foodie, then a visit to beloved neighborhood favorites such as Artichoke Basille’s Pizza or Chelsea Market is a must.

Or, for a nibble in a fancier environment, head up to RH Rooftop Restaurant at RH New York. Brunch in a glamorous, chandelier-filled setting awaits.

The High Line NYC is beckoning you to come up so that she can share her unique point of view with you.

Go find out how she stays so darn fine among all those growing vines!
