How Writing Affects Other Aspects of Everyday Living

One of the most surprising (and pleasant) discoveries about writer’s life is how much it creeps in and affects so many other aspects of everyday living.

A welcome intrusion if you ask me!

What started as me merely seeking to create a home for my musings has grown into so much more.

And all positive repercussions. Just what my 2020 needed.

Here are a few of the spaces where my writer’s shadow stealthily accompanies me in my everyday living.

Writer’s Inspiration While… Showering

Do some of your best ideas arrive while in the shower? It has certainly been happening to me.

And it makes sense, doesn’t it? The therapeutic properties of water do tend to leave our minds relaxed, uncluttered and therefore naturally stimulated.

Mmmm… cool water and fresh ideas cascading down.

Now that’s what I call the ultimate shower combo!

Marketing Mind While… Taking Photos

High quality images are a must to draw in the crowds. (In reality, my little blog’s audience can hardly be described as “the crowds” but just you wait and see!)

So, yes, I am more compelled than ever to step up my photography game. Which for me really means better posing and photo-editing skills.

Just take a look at a recent outing-turned-photo-session (and likely backdrop to a future blog post.)

The motivation to nail a compelling visual is real!

Critical Thinking While… Reading

Like most of you, my reading is primarily for pleasure. Removing yourself from the world around you and getting lost in the land of story-telling is my idea of a dreamy afternoon.

And now, writing appears to have inspired more critical thinking in me as I absorb stories.

In every good book, there are always certain lines that really resonate with you. You know exactly what I mean, don’t you? The quotes that make you instantly stop to go jot them down in your phone or journal.

And now, here I am, ready to take those reflections a step further and write about top takeaways from my point of view.

Content Dreaming While… Conversing

Dialogue during a robust conversation, either in-person or online, can trigger a wealth of content ideas.

You want to explore these themes further.

Like the Save Location function on Google Maps, your mind swiftly drops a pin and assigns a “Want To Write About” flag on that topic.

This one can get tricky though. Friends or family should never feel like conversations with us are “interviews” so what should you do?

Flag that thought and keep it moving!

Analyzing Behind-the-Scenes Dynamics While… Watching TV

Television will always be, first and foremost, my entertainment outlet.

That said, don’t you often notice how much narrative we can weave into a story, further to the one being told on our screens?

Well, there is now an outlet in which I can channel those observations – my blog!

Here’s one recent example: a few weeks ago I watched the coverage of an international cricket match.

Forget about the actual game of flying bats and balls. As I watched, there were so many other dynamics at play that became noticeable.

Between the build-up to the matches, events concerning individual players, and the interview commentary… boy, there was so much good material there.

So much to paint on a canvas beyond two umpires and twenty-two men competing on a pitch.

Tales of disappointment and frustration, of sacrifices made, and even of mental weariness from isolation. And so I wrote about it

How about you?

Do you find yourself in “creator mode” as you are going about your daily living activities?

  1. This is a great & relatable post. I laughed at having writing thoughts in the shower because that happens to me all the time!

  2. Oh my gosh! So relatable, I thought I am writing this post. Truly enjoyed reading. And yes each of the points you have mentioned happens to me all the time. I switch to my blogger mode while conversing. And ideas do come while in shower. I think of so many ideas while in shower and while cooking too. Photography has definitely improved. Hahaha lovely 🙂

    1. So glad you enjoyed it! Let’s see… I cook quite a bit but that’s the one activity where writer’s mode never joins, ha. It’s wonderful to hear though that there’s still a chance for my photography… one day, it will really shine!

  3. Yeah, this is a super relatable post! I love those moments of inspiration where you get a new idea and then have to think about it non stop until you can write it down!

I totally agree with the photography aspect as well! I may not have the worlds best blog but I’d like to think my photo quality is high at least!

    1. Your photos are excellent, it’s the first thing that draws you in when you land.
That’s the type of quality I can only hope to achieve eventually, fingers-crossed!

  4. OK a lot of my best ideas come when I am showering. I feel like this happens when you’re doing mindless tasks. Pretty cool that you can turn a simple walk into a cool photoshoot. Love it! Talking to others is also a great way to spark some inspiration as well. Get new ideas from external parties. Thanks for sharing how writing affects different areas in our lives!

    1. Thanks for reading, Nancy. It’s awesome to hear how much these points resonate with so many of us in the writing community.
Absolutely, engaging with folks and discussing multiple perspectives can be such a good driver for new ideas AND for seeing new angles to old ideas!

  5. This is a great post and all of your points resonated with me! I have a list of blog post ideas always on the go, and my notes in my phone have lists as well. There is inspiration all around us for sure. Now, I just need to write the words to go with these ideas 🙂
